Hammett: Cheaper Crooms

No less and none other than Mike Humbert chips in a text message after reading yesterday’s Pulps in the Movies post about Hammett’s line “the cheaper the crook, the gaudier the patter.”

“I thought you’d enjoy this,” Mike thumbs. “In one of the many audio adaptations of The Maltese Falcon, there was obviously a typo in the script, but Tony Roberts read it exactly as it was written:

The cheaper the croom, the gaudier the patter.

“I can picture him asking off mic: ‘What the hell is a croom?'”
